In poker, the action moves clockwise around the table. The first person to act puts in a small bet (the amount varies by game). This is called the ante. The players then have the option to call, raise or fold. Saying ‘call’ means you want to bet the same amount as the last player. Saying ‘raise’ means you want to increase the amount of your bet by a certain amount. The maximum you can raise is the amount of the big blind.

Once the ante and blind bets have been placed the dealer deals each player two cards. The player must form a poker hand from those 2 private cards and the 5 community cards placed on the table that everyone can use. The best 5 poker hand wins the pot.

During a poker hand it is not a good idea to talk about your cards to other players. This is considered poor etiquette and can give away information that could change other player’s strategies or the strength of their hand. Additionally, it is not a good idea to reveal your own cards until you are the last person to act.
