Poker is one of the most popular games and is played around the world in about half the states in the United States of America. Poker is a family of competitive card games where players place their bets over which hand will be best based on the rules of the game. Some variations of poker have a ranking system based on the amount of chips that are in play, while others do not have a ranking system at all. Poker was first developed by Jim Wright as a social game and then was refined by later designers, most notable of whom are Gary Player, Frank Kern and Bill Murray.

Poker has a few basic rules, which means the game can be adaptably played by any number of players without the need for a standard poker deck or the use of special playing cards. Before the start of a poker game, both players shuffle their decks and then deal out seven cards face down into the middle of the playing area. Four of the cards are kept by each player, called the flop, while the fifth card is called the turn, and that card is face up in front of the other players. All players must keep their betting before the turn is dealt, but they may bet after the turn if they wish. A player may call a card, raise or fold, but otherwise may only execute the actions required for staying in the game.

At the start of each round of poker, each player has to look at his cards and determine whether he has the same value or better than his opponents. If a player has the same hand as another player, that player may switch his bet from the flop to the turn, and the other player has to either match the bet or switch to the flop. After the first round of betting, all players are required to stand up and give their names and cards so that they may be called upon by the dealer. In a draw poker game, the dealer will deal the cards and place them in the draw pile, which is followed by further shuffling. The last round of betting is known as the final table.
